- This is a wonderful of art in every form coming together. #lcmartist Zé Otavio was commissioned to create art for for the Rio de Janeiro Brazilian Carnival:. In 2026, the samba school “Unidos da Tijuca, from Rio de Janeiro, paid tribute to the Brazilian writer Carolina Maria de Jesus.
For the technical rehearsal of the first mestre-sala and porta-bandeira couple, Zé’s friend, an artist he deeply admires both as a creator and as a person, Erica Modesto was invited to design the special costume for the presentation. To compose the piece, Erica chose to include two of Zé’s works portraying Carolina, integrating the paintings into the costume.
It was moving to see Zé’s interpretation of Carolina Maria de Jesus come to life within the context of Carnival, such a powerful space in Brazilian culture, celebrating the memory and importance of this fundamental writer in our history. Art, literature, and Carnival coming together in tribute to a woman who transformed her life experience into an unforgettable body of work.
