Here’s a super fun picture book that just came out from #lcmartist GONÇALO VIANA for Livros do Horizonte! It’s full of fabulous playful illustrations to go along with this ever-so-whimsical & charming story! It’s a retelling of an old Portuguese folk tale titled (O Macaco do Rabo Cortado) translates as “The Monkey with the Cut Tail”. It’s written by Dora Batalim.
Here’s a little bit about the tale:
There is this monkey that wants to go to school just as the humans do, but the kids keep teasing him because of his tail. So he goes to the barber and asks him to cut it off. The kids still tease him regardless so he changes his mind and asks the barber to give back his tail…and since that’s not possible he then steals the barber’s blade for compensation. He then gives the blade to a fish seller but, afterwards, changes his mind and wants it back. Again this is not possible so he steals her fish. He then gives the fish to a baker but, later on, steals his flour. It goes on and on always giving something but then stealing something back in return. Finally the monkey manages to get hold of a guitar and is finally content.
