Born in Lisbon, Goncalo Viana studied architecture and moved to London in his early career. He moved back to illustration after a few years and moved back to his home in Portugal, he uses geometry which provides the framework for his concepts, colours and textures.

“I’m a freelance illustrator based in Lisbon. I specialize in editorial, advertising, publishing and children’s illustration and have a special place in my heart for pattern design, mainly retro looking geometric patterns with strong colors and textures. I started out as an architect and worked at a practice for a few years before moving into freelance territory. The geometry kind of stayed with me and ended up seeping into my illustration work.

Architecture ended up influencing my work a great deal and, later on, seeing work by designers and artists like Alexander Rodchenko and El Lissitzky combined with it and took that influence further. Quino, the Argentinean cartoonist, was also a huge inspiration, by showing me that you could cleverly communicate very complex issues with images alone.

I’m very fond of creating geometrical patterns and like to incorporate them into my illustration work. Lately I’ve been trying them out on different outlets and surfaces through my shop at Society6, It’s an avenue I would like to explore further.”
