GONÇALO VIANA was invited by Vista Alegre to illustrate a special edition set of four coffee cups and saucers, paying tribute to Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. For those who are not familiar with Vista Alegre, it is the most reputed ceramics manufacturer in Portugal, operating since 1824. Their items are considered top quality and they’re the 6th largest tableware producer in the world. Pessoa de G. Viana: After advertising, press and children’s books illustration, Gonçalo Viana, architect and internationally recognized Lisbon illustrator, leaves his signature and geometric trace in porcelain illustration, with the launch of a collection of four Vista Alegre coffee cups, that pay tribute to one of the greatest icons of the city of Lisbon and of Portuguese Culture: the poet Fernando Pessoa, and his ritual of drinking expresso coffee (called “bica” in Lisbon). This was a super fun project, and he’s thrilled by how it turned out. He even says the coffee is super tasty when drinking from your own illustrated cup! We can’t wait to find out for ourselves.
